What Is Easter and Why Do We Celebrate?

Easter is a springtime holiday that celebrates new life and hope. For Christians, it marks the resurrection of Jesus. The Easter story tells how Jesus died on a cross, was laid in a tomb, and then rose from the dead three days later.

Early Christians used eggs to teach this story. The hard shell of an egg represented the sealed tomb, and cracking the egg symbolized Jesus’ resurrection (source). Decorating eggs for Easter dates back to at least the 13th century (source), and eggs were often dyed red to remember Jesus’ blood (source).

The Easter bunny is another familiar symbol. Rabbits have long been symbols of fertility and new life, and stories of an egg-laying hare became part of spring celebrations (source). German immigrants brought the tradition of a hare called Osterhase or Oschter Haws to America in the 1700s (source). Children would make nests for the bunny to lay colored eggs in (source).

Over time the custom spread, and today the Easter bunny delivers eggs, candy, and small gifts in baskets. Easter egg hunts and the White House Easter Egg Roll are popular traditions; rolling eggs across a lawn symbolizes the stone being rolled away from Jesus’ tomb (source).

Why Coloring Pages Are Good for Kids

Coloring isn’t just fun — it helps kids grow and learn. Easter coloring pages help children build fine motor skills as they hold crayons and stay inside the lines. This strengthens hand muscles and improves coordination.

Coloring also helps kids practice focus and patience. When children work on a picture, their brains learn to pay attention to details. They can count objects, name colors, and talk about what they see in the image.

Most importantly, coloring boosts creativity and imagination. Kids choose their own colors, design patterns on Easter eggs, and bring Bible scenes to life. It gives children a simple way to express themselves.

Adults benefit too. Coloring can feel calm and relaxing. It helps families slow down, reduce screen time, and enjoy meaningful Easter activities together.

Make Easter More Meaningful

Easter coloring pages can be more than a craft. They can help kids learn the Easter story and talk about what Easter means. Here are simple ways to use these printable coloring sheets at home, school, or church.

  • Read a short Easter story from a kids Bible or book. Then choose a page that matches the story, like the cross, the empty tomb, or the resurrection.
  • Talk about Easter symbols like eggs, flowers, and butterflies. Ask simple questions like: “What does this remind you of?” or “What is your favorite part of Easter?”
  • Let kids personalize the page by writing their name, adding a “Happy Easter” note, or drawing extra eggs, grass, or flowers in the background.
  • Do an egg hunt after coloring. Hide finished pages or hide plastic eggs near the coloring table for a quick, fun activity.

These ideas work great for Sunday school, homeschool, preschool, and family gatherings. They also help kids slow down, focus, and enjoy a screen-free Easter activity.
